Ardastra Gardens, Nassau, Bahamas is a bit to the west of downtown Nassau, - you get there either by courtesy bus from downtown or by bus 10, or you could walk there along the sea: take Westbay Street until Chippingham Road (on your left, opposite Arawak Island) and walk about 10 minutes more from here. It is a very small place (6 acres), but the space has been used very efficiently, and the luscious vegetation is used so imaginatively to create hidden paths that you feel the place is bigger than it is. The absolute center of both the garden and the promotional efforts of the management are the daily flamingo shows (at 11, 14 and 16). They commence with the flamingoes' slow walk from their pond to the arena, where they parade leasurely around looking at the spectators. This is quite innocent, but later in the show the keeper starts chasing the poor birds around. I remember that the spectators liked it, which just goes to show that there are fools everywhere. When I visited the place the rain poured down for some five minutes at the end of the show, but flamingoes apparantly don't mind a bit of mud. Zoo visitors do, so after the rain had stopped most people had left. Apart from the flamingo chase the level of animal upkeep seems quite good. Due to the small area you won't find large animals like elephants or buffalos here, but there is a fine collection of small mammals and birds, - with some real rarities from the region, such as the almost extinct parrot species from the southern end of Grand Abaco.
