There are two Safari-Parks in Denmark: Knuthenborg in Lolland and Givskud in Jutland. In central Jutland you find Givskud Zoo - known by its former name 'the Lionpark' by all locals. The name betrays its history: it basically started out in 1969 as an enclosure with a fence around some lions, and of course you cannot walk around inside that enclosure. However the park has developed more and more in the direction of a general zoo, where you have to walk around at least part of the area. The lion park was founded by Jacob Hansen, who long ago had a small, now defunct zoo at nearby Vejle. Apart from the lions it has alpakas, antelopes and gazelles, elephants, giraffes and monkeys et cetera, and it recently welcomed the gorillas of Copenhagen Zoo (one female died, but then Dublin Zoo had a spare female, who was bullied by its companions). Among the rarer animals should be mentioned the arabian oryx, przewalski's horse and hawaiian geese. The park generally has a good reputation, though it has had some much publicised bad luck with the elephants (they have had problems finding an male that could match their three formidable oliphaunt ladies, - I have in my personal collections a picture of a young male trying to climb the fence). Its somewhat remote location has not prevented more than 300.000 visitors every year from finding it. You can bring your own car, but if you come by public transport, you can take a safari bus, which follow the same 3.5 km long trail as the private cars. This tour takes approx. 1 hour.
