Visitor Reviews

Antwerp Zoo is a typical "urban" Zoo. Major problem is limited space and zero possibility of growth. Therefore a more spacious facility excist about 30 km to the south at Plankendael animalpark. At Antwerp, great effort has (and still are) being made to move from the ancient collection of animals, to a modern facility, where every species gets the space and accomodation it needs. This means of course, less species, but larger enclosures with more animals of every sort shown.Proof that this strategy works, is the great breeding succes, that we see every year. Last year, a new elephant enclosure, became the latest adition. Our Zoo is best know for its breeding-succeses with species from the Kongo (a former colony of Belgium) We hold the studbook for the okapi (Okapi johnstoni), Congo peacock (Afropavo congensis) and the bonobo (Pan troglodytes verus). More then 75% of every okapi in captivity worldwide has Antwerp blood. So if you ever are in the neighbourhood, do pay it a visit. It will prove well worth it. After all. between 90,0000 and 1 million people do so every year.
