This Review submitted by: Nigel Foster, January 2001
This is an animal sanctuary which has Australian fauna ONLY . It is situated in natural bushland on the very outskirts of town , and has a stream running through it . The trails are rustic looking to fit in the surroundings , but are accessible for all people . There is one main trail , with side trails running off it which lead to the animals . The enclosures are large enough for the animals to appear reasonably happy , and there are several areas where animal/human contact can be made -- I stroked kangaroos , wallabies and wombats , held a koala , touched a carpet python , all with the supervision of staff . The roaming volunteers do an excellent job as guides , there should be more people like them in more zoos .
I remember seeing a few picnic areas and toilets , and there is a cafe/souveneir shop ; apart from that, there were no extra attractions , but they are not really needed .There were also several walk through enclosures that were very large sized . All in all ,this is a very good place to visit , if you only wish to see Australian fauna . It is not very easy getting there by public transport from Melbourne , but it can be done albeit it takes a long time to get to and from the sanctuary. I hope that the staff there keep up the good work
